In Response to Ashley's Post

In response to Ashley’s post “Really the End?” I would definitely agree with the point that what is causing the decline of newspapers is other sources. Those other sources are more specifically television and online news. Why spend the time buying a paper, thumbing through it, and throwing out the extra ads all to find only a few stories with any actual importance to the reader, when you can just go online of watch TV for free. Also other sources are more compact and straight to the point, less fluffed up with extra stuff to fill the entire paper.

Whether these alternate news sources are a good thing for newspapers is leaning towards negative. Advertisement has gone way down over the past years so ad company’s have had to turn to alternative means of reaching consumers, be that through TV or the internet. People may now be able to get to the news easier now but at what cost. The newspaper, which as shown in the Shafer article was once and was intended to be a strong democratic institution is now beginning to be seen as old fashioned. Now that people can get news from their other sources the newspaper may never see the light of day in the future. It is a sad thought but it is quickly becoming a reality.
